I’ve been driving the cheapest BMW i3 in America for 5 months now, and I wonder: How good is this car?

I’m in awe of my 2014 BMW i3. It’s just like any car I’ve ever driven and driven.

Bmw I3 Review 2024

Car In fact, it’s so good that I’ve recommended the machine to everyone I know, because every time I get behind the wheel, I think, “I can’t believe how good of this car.” a short blog.

The word “Perfect” is hell, and when it comes to cars, the word can’t be taken out of context. For example, the Toyota Land Cruiser is perfect if you have a land vehicle. The Jeep Wrangler is perfect if you’re rock climbing in Moab. The Porsche 911 is a favorite at Laguna Seca. The 1989 Ford F-150 long bed with T18 moving stick 300 inline six ants is perfect for your job site. And the BMW i3 is great if you live outside the city and have the means to afford it. And I mean really big

When I think about what I need for my trip to LA, there are only a few things: 1. Convenience (air is really cheap; $5! Cheap!) 2. Fast (it’s a pain to get started here ) 3. Small external parts (the car is rough). 4. Good interior size (so I can carry my gear/parking space/friends/cat) and 5. Comfort (carry on the 405 in an old junker and you’ll get tired ).

The i3 features each feature. No wind for the first 70 miles on the highway or 85 miles in the city. It’s fast enough that I can merge into traffic—even on the famous 110 shortcut—with ease. The traffic is small, so the location is good; a rear camera and parking sensors help (plus, the car can parallelize itself!). There is plenty of space inside (see the picture below to see the huge shelf I fit into the i3 on one trip!). And it’s nice and cozy inside, so it’s easy to travel.

Ground clearance helps when crossing unguarded roads or accidentally hitting a truck, the higher seats make the car feel more spacious, and the cabin feels tighter. steering wheel – the i3 is the ‘turnkey’ mobile phone.

I only pay a little for gas and I do it because I drive more than 75 miles

This setting; I can get enough range to go electric more than 90 percent of the time, but I can also drive farther (say to San Diego) without pulling a charged battery. large, heavy (I carry a small two-cylinder gas engine). It’s a real shame because so few vehicles these days offer 70+ miles of EV range with gas range extenders if you want to go further. Almost all new PHEVs have electric ranges under 50 miles The I3, in my opinion, offers what most Americans need today, even if it’s nine years old.

Granted, the i3 is expensive new (mine was over $52,000), but I still have 135,000 miles on it, especially with the new BMW battery installed under warranty right before. when i picked it up, the i3 looked brand new. the $10,499 I paid was amazing. This price is a little against my “perfect” claim; for the vehicle to perform well under these conditions

Bmw Abandons The I3, The Car That Could Have Birthed A Bright Electric Future

I haven’t fixed anything on my i3 since I bought it. The electric motor doesn’t have many parts, the transmission has a single-stage reduction to keep it going, the i3’s revitalizing feel every time I don’t step on the brake pedal, the batteries are fresh and so on. Obviously, five months without a repair is nothing to brag about, but the i3 has a good reputation for reliability. Also, since it’s carbon fiber, the car won’t rust, and since the body panels are plastic, they won’t break.

There are dishes in my house; thanks to a kind reader I have an extension cord that allows me to stand in the back of my Jeep (I have a tandem space) and still charge with the wall-box. It’s free at work. When I stay at my friend’s house, I plug into his exit 110 and earn 4.5 percent (3 miles) per hour. If my battery is half dead from my daily commute/shopping using this standard version, it will be full by 8am if I plug it in before 9pm. It’s not bad. With a standard Level 2 lease, the vehicle can be filled in 4.5 hours, or 80 percent in three hours.

I haven’t spent $1,000 to replace its hard-to-find tires, so I may change my tune, but at this point—five months ago—I’m impressed with this little car. Getting a new car, safe, smart, mostly electric, cheap, practical, fast, I think it still looks good nine years after it rolled off the assembly line – all for a total of $11,600? Of course. The BMW i3 is just legal.

The fact that the rear engine / motor, rear wheel drive, is made of carbon fiber, can go from zero to 30 mph at the same speed as the F30 M3, and the special inside it is more “delicious. “than many of its competitors. But of course it’s not as much fun as, say, a manual 911 (no EV I think) or even a stickshift Mini Cooper S, and it’s not as soulful as my old cars. Still, the i3 is a supercar that has managed to defy the ‘city car’ genre to the point where it’s hard to find fault.

But I haven’t bought a new hat for it yet, so we’ll see if I can make a note of it next year.

If you follow my monthly column in this magazine, “The Asphalt Jungle,” you know that when I hear the name “i8,” I wake up on BMW’s amazing hybrid. However, I didn’t get to test drive the i8’s smaller sibling, the i3 city electric. It’s true, because I thought, compared to the agile i8, it looks like a spaceship, the box, the right i3, which is exciting and looks like an airplane carrier.

So I drove an i3 with extended range (which BMW calls “REx”) for a week. My bad thoughts… broke it.

No, the i3 is not the kind of car that will take your breath away like its sibling. But it is a very powerful machine in itself, which does its job – walking around the city in comfort and silence while producing zero emissions (most of the time). – almost perfect.

Now, it’s fair to say that the i3’s design has been the subject of some controversy. Some people I asked while driving in LA were just rude. “It reminds me of my vacuum cleaner,” says one, who probably owns one of those expensive Dyson creations. The mom said pointing to the i3, then to her baby’s legs that were sticking out of the stroller, “See?
